A 33-year-old homeless man was arrested for burglary March 26 after falling asleep in the Silverdale Office Depot and hiding in the attic crawlspace.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the store on Mickelberry Road Northwest at 8:12 a.m. on reports of a burglary, according to reports from the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office. The store’s assistant manager said the man “sort of just appeared” when he was opening the store at 7 a.m.

An audible alarm was activated that morning at 4:59 and a toilet in the men’s restroom was clogged with ceiling tile dust. The assistant manager believed the man was hiding in the attic crawl space all night. A wall to the supply room next to the restroom was smashed, indicating that’s how the man escaped.

When the man contacted the assistant manager, he said he didn’t realize the store wasn’t open yet and asked to be let out.

The man was later found inside a truck parked on a powerline road off of Dickey Road. He told a deputy he fell asleep while sitting on the toilet and awoke to darkness. He said his cell phone was dead and he was scared. He was taken to Kitsap County jail for investigation of second-degree burglary. Nothing was stolen from the store.
