Four people became “severely ill” and were taken to the hospital Oct. 18 after smoking a substance known as “legal marijuana” bought at a Silverdale smoke shop.

Poulsbo Fire Department medics and Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies were called at 9:18 p.m.to the residence on the 1600 block of Northeast Midgard Way in Poulsbo after a 911 dispatcher advised four people were nonresponsive.

The four, ranging in age from 18 to 22, said they smoked a substance said to mimic the effects of marijuana called “Ultra Cloud 10,” bought at a tobacco store for $16.

“She was crying and was feeling very ill,” a deputy wrote about an 18-year-old woman. “She complained of chest pains and wanted to go to the hospital to get checked out.”

The substance, known sometimes by the brand name “Spice,” are herbs coated with a chemical that produces a similar effect to marijuana. It is illegal in several states, but not Washington.
