Police pursuit, crash leads to arrests

Bobby Lee Royster, Jr., 44, and Lydia Adele Heagy, 34, were arrested Jan. 18 after being involved in a police chase

Two Port Orchard residents remain in Kitsap County Jail after they tried to flee police during a police pursuit that resulted in a two-car collision that sent a 64 year-old South Kitsap man to the hospital.

According to Deputy Scott Wilson, Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office public information officer, Bobby Lee Royster, Jr., 44, and Lydia Adele Heagy, 34, were arrested Jan. 18 after being involved in a police chase that day.

Royster was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and stolen property, attempting to elude a pursuing police, theft, escape from community custody and driving with a suspended license. Her bail was set at $107,000.

Heagy was charged with delivery of methamphetamine, identity theft, theft and possession of stolen property. His bail was set at $50,000.

Wilson said around 11:24 a.m., an officer on patrol in the vicinity of SE Carl Pickel Drive and SE Lund Avenue, spotted a maroon 2010 Honda CRV, driven by Royster, bearing stolen license plates. The plates, registered to a 2008 Ford Escape in East Bremerton, were reported stolen on Nov. 20, 2012.

The officer attempted to stop the Honda, but Royster continued eastbound on Lund Avenue and then turned southbound onto Bethel Road SE, said Wilson.

The Honda, with two occupants reported inside, turned westbound at the intersection of SE Sedgwick Road with two Port Orchard police cars in moderate pursuit. The pursuit continued over the State Highway 16 overpass and west to the intersection of Sedgwick and Sidney Road SW, where the suspect driver turned southbound and accelerated between 60 and 70 mph.

Wilson said the Honda crossed the centerline as the suspect driver attempted to pass a vehicle also heading southbound.

Police officers observed an oncoming vehicle headed northbound and the Honda’s driver tried to move back into the southbound lane when it struck the rear of a 2004 Ford Ranger truck. The impact knocked the truck into a retaining wall and flipped over. The truck’s driver was extricated from the cab by South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews. He was later transported to Tacoma General Hospital with unknown injuries.

Wilson said Heagy was transported to Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton for evaluation and treatment.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the accident.
