Local fire departments are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association for Fire Prevention Week 2009, which runs Oct. 3-10.
This year’s campaign, “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned.”, focuses on ways to keep homes fire safe and prevent painful burns.
To kick off Fire Prevention Week, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue, Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue firefighters are participating in “Give Burns the Boot” tomorrow at local retail outlets. All donations benefit the Northwest Burn Foundation.
Firefighters also are partnering with local teachers to get students and families entered in a fire escape planning contest. Interested teachers are provided escape planning grids and instructions. Children and their families then work together to plan and practice their family fire escape route. Each student who returns a plan to his or her teacher receives a small gift. The classroom returning the highest percentage of completed plans will win an ice cream party with firefighters, courtesy of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Locals 2819 and 2876.
CKFR will host a free open house and chili feed 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Station 51 on Silverdale Way in Silverdale. The event includes fire engine rides and tours.
