Hit and run suspect shoots himself with nail gun

A man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition Thursday after shooting himself in the chest with a nail gun.

Washington State Patrol troopers were on a traffic stop on Newberry Hill Road at Chico Way in Silverdale around 1:40 p.m. May 1 when they observed a Ford Explorer collide with a Ford Mustang. Troopers made eye contact with the driver of the Explorer, who proceeded northbound on State Route 3 after failing to stop and remain at the scene of the collision.

A trooper followed the Explorer and activated his lights and siren as they approached the exit to Kitsap Mall Boulevard. The vehicle exited at a slow rate of speed before coming to a stop on the shoulder at the top of the ramp. The trooper gave the driver several verbal commands, but the man was unresponsive. The trooper approached the vehicle and the 18-year-old male passenger told him the driver had shot himself.

Prior to making contact with the trooper, the driver apparently shot himself in the upper left chest area with a concrete nail gun. A “ram gun” is a concrete tool that shoots an approximate 6-inch steel nail, according to the passenger.

Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue transported the driver to Harrison Medical Center for airlift and the man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
