Central Kitsap students scored higher than the state and national average in both the ACT and SAT college admissions tests according to Franklyn MacKenzie, director of secondary education for CKSD.
MacKenzie said 120 students took the ACT this year.
“Of those who take it, 54 percent show that they are college-ready because of where they score in the individual areas of the test,” he said. “That’s higher than the 41 percent showing for the state.”
Average ACT English scores this year were 23.9 for the district, 22.3 for the state and 20.3 nationwide. Average ACT math scores were 24.8 for the district, 23.3 for the state and 20.9 nationwide.
Average ACT reading scores were 25.2 for the district, 23.4 for the state and 21.3 nationwide. Average ACT science scores were 24.4 for the district, 22.7 for the state and 20.8 nationwide.
The district’s scores for the SAT, another college entrance exam, were also high. 371 seniors took the SAT test this year.
“We typically rank higher than the state and nation in our test results,” MacKenzie said of the SAT results.
Average SAT critical reading scores were 553 for the district, 510 for the state and 497 nationwide. Average SAT math scores were 560 for the district, 518 for the state and 513 nationwide. Average SAT writing scores were 526 for the district, 491 for the state and 487 nationwide.
The district encourages sophomores and juniors to take the PSAT — (short for “preliminary SAT”) so the SAT will be less daunting when they take it.
“The research will show if you take the PSAT your chances of scoring higher on the SAT are much greater,” MacKenzie said.
