The Klahowya fastpitch team inched closer to a district tournament berth with a 12-0 win against Bremerton at home Tuesday.

KSS pitcher Kazandra Holliday continued her dominance of the Olympic League, striking out 14 batters while going 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.

The Lady Eagles faced North Kitsap in the regular-season finale yesterday — results were unavailable at press time — with a chance to secure their spot in the Class 2A West Central District III tournament, which begins May 22 at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.

Tuesday’s game against Bremerton (3-13) was never in doubt, with KSS pushing at least one run across each inning. A 2-0 first-inning lead ballooned to 4-0 in the second, 5-0 in the third and 10-0 in the fourth thanks to a five-run outburst.

Holliday, meanwhile, allowed one hit and threw a total of nine balls in six innings of work.

“We were just basically doing fastballs in and out and then a rise, that’s about it,” Holliday said. “They were swinging at pretty much everything.”

Last week, the Lady Eagles pulled out their biggest win of the season with a 3-0 victory at North Mason, which had been undefeated in league play prior to that game.

Both Holliday and coach Holly Carver said the NM victory was a confidence booster as well as a shot of momentum heading into the final week of the regular season.

“It means we can pull out a game if we really need to,” Holliday said. “Any team can beat anybody.”

Added Carver, “It shows them that they can actually do it. They know they can do it, but we’ve always been a little short.”

With a senior-heavy lineup and memories of three consecutive seasons in which the team fell one game shy of state, this KSS team appears ready to get over the hump. The NM win couldn’t have come at a better time with the season winding down.

“Since we beat them, we know that we can compete in state and we’re a state-qualified team,” Holliday said. “We have a lot of chemistry. We started out rough, but it’s a different team than in the beginning (of the season).”

Central Kitsap

The Lady Cougars are headed to districts regardless of today’s outcome against South Kitsap in a Narrows League Tournament game at SERA in Tacoma.

If CK beats SK, then it would secure the Narrows No. 3 seed to districts. A loss, however, would drop the Lady Cougars to No. 4.

CK took second at districts last season behind the pitching of Carolyn Cross.

The team ended the regular season Tuesday with a 1-0 win at Bainbridge.

The Class 4A West Central District III tournament begins May 22 at Sprinker Recreation Center in Tacoma.
