For the Bremerton track and field team, tune-up time is over.

The Knights, coming off a sub-district meet in which they competed against each of the Olympic League’s Class 3A teams in Port Angeles, begin the two-day Class 3A West Central District III track and field championships at Mount Tahoma in Tacoma today.

While a large portion of the team didn’t qualify for districts, there are a few athletes who did.

Jarell Flora leads that pack, qualifying in the 200- and 400-meter races, as well as in the 4X100 relay with teammates David Pierce, Terrick McGhee and Kyle Kennedy.

Flora, who turned out for track for the first time this season, took first in both the 200 (23.30 seconds) and 400 (51.62) at sub-districts, although his biggest competitor from the Olympic League, Darrious Walker of Olympic, did not race.

At districts, Flora will race in Lane 5 in the 200 and in Lane 4 in the 400, both of which are favorable draws, but his district-qualifying times are modest compared to the competition he’ll face. Of the 16 racers who qualified for districts, he holds the 15th-best time in the 200 and the 6th-best time in the 400.

“I know that he can run a little faster,” said coach Lloyd Pugh, referring to the 200.

Added Flora, “I’m pretty much the underdog so I’m trying to do the best I can.”

Flora said the “200 is much easier,” but his chances are probably better in the 400 because it caters to his 6-foot-1 build and consequent long strides.

“I prefer the 400 because I’m built for it,” Flora said. “It takes me a while to build up my speed, so the 400 is built better for me.”

In addition to the 4X100, the 4X400 relay team also qualified for districts — albeit by default — but neither Pugh nor the athletes believe it will post a state-qualifying time. However, each of the members hope to post personal records, or “PR’s,” in their individual legs. The team’s current time is 3:44.41.

“’PR’s,’” said relay member David Fry, referring to his goals for districts. “We want to break (our time) by a good five or 10 seconds.”

Stephanie Himmelsbach, a senior, is the leading member of the girls team. She competed in the 100 and 300 hurdles, javelin and high jump, although she said Wednesday she won’t compete in the high jump at districts.

At sub-districts, Himmelsbach won the 100 hurdles (16.52), placed second in both the 300 (49.68) and javelin (104 feet, 4 inches) and tied for fifth in the high jump (4-08).

“It’s state I’m really pushing for this year,” she said. “This has definitely got to be the year I make state.”

Himmelsbach added between the 100 and 300, her chances of making state are “pretty even.”

In the javelin, Pugh said, it’s going to take a big effort for Himmelsbach to qualify for state. Her current top throw in that event is 105-06.

“I think she’s going to have to break 110 (feet) to make state,” Pugh said.

Sophomore Kyle Kennedy, meanwhile, figures to compete for a spot to state in javelin. After winning the event at the Olympic League Championships May 3 with a throw of 182-08, he won again at sub-districts with a 178-01.

“I think he’s getting to the point where he’ll pop one,” Pugh said. “Although at sub-districts, he was really nervous for some reason.”
