A really bad habit

A sheriff’s deputy was on patrol on NW Newberry Hill Road approaching Dickey Road NW in Silverdale shortly after 10 p.m. April 19 when he noticed a pickup truck with a motorcycle in the bed having trouble driving up the hill. The driver eventually pulled the truck over and activated its emergency flashers, but it was still blocking the road.

The 35-year-old Central Kitsap man driving the truck told the deputy he was having trouble getting up the hill and thought he had bad fuel in the vehicle. He said the truck wasn’t his and he borrowed it from a friend. The man also said his driver’s license was suspended.

He was arrested on suspicion of third-degree driving with a suspended license. The deputy searched him and found a plastic container in his front pants pocket. It contained a large quantity of methamphetamine.

The deputy asked the man why he had so much meth and he said he has a bad habit.

The deputy checked the data on the motorcycle and discovered it was reported stolen out of Port Angeles. When asked about the motorcycle, the man said he didn’t know it was stolen. He said he got it from a man named Jeff in Poulsbo earlier that day.

He was arrested and booked into jail for violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act: possession of methamphetamine and a warrant. His bail is set at $35,000.

Depression

A sheriff’s deputy responded to Jo-Ann Fabrics in Silverdale for a report of theft at 4:15 p.m. April 17.

A Jo-Ann Fabrics security guard said the 18-year-old Seabeck man who’s worked at the store since July or August 2008 was detained for stealing by way of refund fraud. He showed the deputy a written statement the suspect provided. The security guard said the man would use a receipt and ring up a refund after doing a legitimate transaction, sometimes signing the customers’ name, and keep the refunded cash from the register for himself.

The man told the deputy a friend told him how to do receipt refund fraud and he’s stolen roughly $400 in cash and about $100 worth of merchandise since December or January.

The man said he’s been seeing a counselor for depression and said he “felt bad” about pocketing the money.

He was arrested and booked into jail for second-degree theft, embezzlement and forgery. He was released on personal recognizance pending an appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court.

A neighbor called 911 when he heard yelling, screaming and loud music coming from a home in the 8400 block of Illahee Road NE in East Bremerton at 1:30 a.m. April 12.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and could hear the music and people talking from more than 50 feet away. When a deputy drove past the house, the three men standing on the front porch ran inside, turned down the music and shut off all the lights.

Deputies pounded on the door numerous times, but no one answered. Two deputies saw people peeking through the window blinds, but no one came to the door.

Deputies could see beer bottles, marijuana and a glass pipe used for smoking marijuana sitting in plain view on a coffee table in the living room through a window. A deputy was issued a search warrant over the telephone to search the living room of the home.

A man appeared to walk toward the front door of the residence, but picked up the glass pipe and hid it. A deputy then forced entry into the house.

Deputies found nine people, some minors, inside the home. A 17-year-old East Bremerton boy had a backpack filled with marijuana and a digital scale. He said he attempted to sell marijuana to his friends because he couldn’t find a job right now.

The 19-year-old homeowner said they were “just hanging out having a party” and all of the people inside his house were guests.

The 17-year-old was arrested and booked into juvenile detention for violation of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act: possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The 19-year-old was detained then released and a report was forwarded to the prosecutor’s.

No assault here

A woman called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. April 11 reporting she witnessed an assault in progress in the parking lot outside Irene’s School of Dance on Bucklin Hill Road in Silverdale. She said a man was “throwing a female around” and then he “slammed the female onto the ground.”

Deputies responded and detained the 34-year-old Central Kitsap man and 24-year-old Central Kitsap woman in the parking lot. The woman tried to punch one deputy and had bruises on her arm.

The woman told a deputy she and her boyfriend, the 34-year-old man, went out to a bar for her birthday that night and admitted both of them were intoxicated. She said they got into a verbal argument, then “kind of wrestled with each other a little bit.” She said she accidentally fell onto her boyfriend at one point and that could have looked like an assault.

She also denied trying to punch a deputy. She said she lost her balance, causing her arm to “fly around,” which may have looked like she was trying to hit him.

The man was arrested and booked into jail for fourth-degree assault. He was later released.

The woman was arrested and booked into jail for third-degree attempted assault on a law enforcement officer and fourth-degree assault. She also was later released.
