Silverdale gymnast selected for prestigious camp

Silverdale resident Samantha Thompson, 8, has been selected to participate in the National TOP B Training Camp in Texas, an elite gymnastics program instructed by Olympic coaches.

Thompson was among 80 athletes nationwide who were chosen to participate in the B camp for 8-year-olds, receiving an invitation Oct. 7 after participating in a TOP camp hosted by Bela Karolyi. More than 2,700 gymnasts ranging from 8 to 11 years old competed for spots in their respective age divisions.

The program will be held Dec. 1-5.

Central Kitsap volleyball takes fourth at 16-team invite

The Central Kitsap High School volleyball team placed fourth of 16 Saturday at the Capitol City Classic at Capital High School in Olympia.

Central Kitsap defeated Olympic High School and Timberline High School and tied Tumwater High School in pool play to advance to the championship bracket. The team went 2-2 in the championship bracket, defeating Puyallup High School and Gig Harbor High School and falling to Selah High School and Capital High School, the eventual champion.

Asha Hill was named to the all-tournament team and led the Lady Cougars with 48 kills, 43 digs and seven aces in seven matches, while Alexis Wesley added 43 kills, 10 blocks and eight aces. Tricia Vantino had 102 assists, 44 digs and 10 aces, and Jaylen Boydon tallied 59 digs.

Central Kitsap defeated Stadium High School 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-12, 17-25, 15-9) Tuesday behind 14 kills, 10 digs and seven blocks from Wesley. The team is 14-6 overall and 2-1 in the Narrows League.

Olympic, meanwhile, defeated Klahowya Secondary School 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-23) Tuesday, led by Monica Phinney’s 10 kills.

Results were not reported from Bremerton High School.

Pumas to hold open tryouts for indoor squad

The Kitsap Pumas will hold open tryouts for their newly formed professional indoor club from 9 to 11 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Olympic Soccer and Sports Center at Pendergast Regional Park in Bremerton, 1199 Union Ave.

Kitsap will play in the Professional Arena Soccer League for the 2010-11 season, beginning in November.

Check-in will begin at 8:15 p.m. and the tryout fee is $50.

Tomahawks pick up first win

The Puget Sound Tomahawks of the Northern Pacific Hockey League defeated the River City (Ore.) Jaguars 3-1 Oct. 8 at the Bremerton Ice Arena to earn their first victory of the season.

Chris Videto scored two goals to lead Puget Sound (1-5), which lost a night later to the Eugene Generals, 9-1.

The Tomahawks visited the Southern Oregon Spartans Thursday, but results from that game were unavailable at press time. The squad faces Southern Oregon at 7:30 p.m. Friday, also on the road. Its next home game is Oct. 20.

Large turnout expected for first Poulsbo Marathon

The first-ever Poulsbo Marathon will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on Hostmark Street next to North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo, 1780 NE Hostmark St.

Organizers are expecting at least 200 runners to participate, with athletes choosing between a 26.2-mile course or a 13.1-mile route.

The half-marathon costs $60 and the full-marathon costs $80 the day of the race. Both start on Hostmark.

Money raised will be donated to the North Kitsap Trails Association, which is planning to connect the String of Pearl trails that spread throughout the North Kitsap area, said Trails Association President John Willett.

Six aid stations have been set up along the route and prize packages will be provided by Poulsbo Running for the top three overall male and female winners for both races.
