After a short public hearing Monday, Kitsap County commissioners approved a resolution that calls for closing a portion of Schold Road NW to vehicular traffic.

Commissioner Josh Brown said the closure was approved after the board heard from representatives of the Clear Creek Task Force.

The Clear Creek Trail is in the vicinity of the road being closed, north of Waaga Way and Silverdale Way.

“The folks from the Clear Creek Task Force support the county moving forward with the road closure,” Brown said.

He said three people spoke at the public hearing and there was no opposition to the closure. Residents in the area were assured that they will have access to their homes.

The initial closure will happen sometime this fall and will be temporary, closing the road just south of the homes that neighbor the trail.

Pedestrians and bicyclists will have access to the trail as normal. Barriers will be placed to mark the area off limits to vehicles, but could be moved if needed for emergency access.

A permanent closure is expected in 2015 and will close 3,100 feet of the road, but will create a turn-around south of the residences so that vehicles can access the residences in the area.

During that time there will be extensive work done on the trail including ADA access and a footbridge.

All property owners will maintain their current access to their properties on the remaining section of Schold Road NW.

The cost of the temporary road project is estimated to be $20,000 for time and materials.

Removing sections of Schold Road is necessary, according to the county’s public works officials, so the east fork of the creek can return to its original configuration.
