For several months now, Central Kitsap School District board members have been considering ways to honor the late John D. “Bud” Hawk, a World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient who spent nearly three decades as a teacher or principal in the district.

The district sought input last month through a survey that was completed by 431 participants.

During last night’s CKSD board meeting, after discussion and consideration, the school board came to a unanimous two-part decision for recognizing Hawk’s service to his country and to the district.

Citing its history and close ties to the military, the board voted to rename Jackson Park Elementary School.

The school will be named “John D. ‘Bud’ Hawk Elementary at Jackson Park.” The board also voted to name the Brownsville Elementary School library and courtyard in honor of John D. “Bud” Hawk.

“These actions are intended to honor the service of Mr. Hawk to our nation as well as his service to our district,” explained Interim Superintendent David McVicker. “Brownsville is excited about finding some unique ways to honor one of its favorite principals. At Jackson Park, we have the opportunity to honor two patriots: Bud Hawk and Senator Henry M. ‘Scoop’ Jackson.”

This fall, a new elementary school — currently in its final phase of construction — will replace the current Jackson Park Elementary School. The new school name, supported by a majority of survey respondents, will recognize both Bud Hawk and Senator Jackson, who is credited for securing funding for the Jackson Park area.

“The school board felt this name is a great way to recognize two highly deserving individuals,” said McVicker. “It honors outstanding civilian service to our state and nation, as well as military service and service to the district.”
