Security sweeps inside and outside of the base have determine that there is no threat to base personnel and the security “posture” has been relaxed, according to Tom Danaher, public affairs officer for Naval Base Kitsap.

No personnel injuries have been reported and as of 11:30 a.m. personnel have returned to a normal workday.

Danaher said that at approximately 9:47 a.m. this morning Naval Base Kitsap Bangor went into a heightened security posture while responding to a report of possible gunfire near the base perimeter, according to

The Trident Gate on highway 308 was closed and personnel in buildings in the area were required to shelter in place.

Kitsap County Sherriff and Navy Criminal Investigative Service coordinated with base security to conduct security sweeps in response to what was reported to be loud noises sounding like gun shots.

After interviewing witnesses, it appears the sounds came from the backfire of an old truck in the area, said Scott Wilson, sheriff’s office spokesman.

The Bangor Keyport Naval Base went on lockdown around 9:30 a.m.

“Witnesses reported gunshots in the area and because of the incidents of shootings on military bases in other areas of the county, base officials here decided to be cautious and place the base on lockdown,” Wilson said.

At that time, Tom Danaher,  said the base reacted to the reports of gunshots “as we’ve practiced many times.”

“Right now it’s precautionary until we know what’s happened,” he said. “We closed the (Trident) gate and people in the nearby buildings are on alert, which means they’re not going near the windows.”

Another unconfirmed report from inside the base was that a couple of shots were accidentally fired at the orientation building.
