Although power was restored 35 minutes before the first bell would have rung for classes at 7:45 a.m., Olympic High School closed for the day.
The Central Kitsap School District decided to close the school about 5 a.m., said district spokesman David Beil.
Crews from Puget Sound Energy were working on an underground cable throughout the night, finally restoring power to about 150 Central Kitsap customers, including the high school, at 7:10 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Monday night Puget Sound Energy officials estimated power would be restored by 7 p.m.
Crews identified a faulty section of underground cable near the high school located on the 7000 block of Stampede Boulevard in Bremerton. But once they excavated the area, they couldn’t find the problem, said Davina Gruenstein, spokeswoman for Puget Sound Energy. She said a temporary overhead line was installed, giving power back to customers. Crews will continue to look for the faulty section of the cable.
After running on generator power for the first few hours of the school day Monday, students were released early from Olympic High School and Eastside Alternative High School.
After-school activities were originally canceled, but have since been restored including sports practices and games. The district budget meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the school’s forum has not been canceled.
