For the eighth time in nine years, Central Kitsap High School made Newsweek magazine’s list of the top public high schools in the country.

Central Kitsap was ranked among the top 6 percent of the nation’s high schools — 427 of 1,622.

The rankings are based on the number of Advanced Placement tests given divided by the number of graduating seniors which yields an index — 2.431 for Central Kitsap.

“It’s a raised culture of common expectations,” said Central Kitsap Principal Steve Coons. “It’s thrilling to see it happen year after year. It’s expected now.”

Central Kitsap has in the past ranked as high as 305.

Klahowya Secondary School also made the list for the first time in its history with a ranking of 1470 and an index of 1.133.

There are more than 500 public high schools serving grades nine through 12, according to a state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction spokesman. Thirty-two made the list.
