A young child was knocked out of his stroller Monday after being hit by a pickup truck that fled the scene at the intersection of Wheaton Way and Sylvan Way.
The boy’s mother told police she was pushing a stroller across a crosswalk with her son strapped inside and the walk signal turned on, according to Bremerton Police reports. The Toyota pickup truck pulled into the crosswalk and the mother tried to walk around it, but the 36-year-old driver took off, hitting the stroller and causing the boy to knock the side of his head on the ground.
The mother’s 24-year-old boyfriend told police the truck initially stopped after hitting the boy, so he picked up a wooden club and stood in front of the truck. When he stepped aside, the driver went south on Wheaton Way.
Police found the driver, a man from Port Orchard, at Wheaton Way and Sheridan Road. He was taken to the Kitsap County jail for investigation of hit and run with injury.
