Sports briefs: Aban sets two swim records in first meet

SWIMMING

North Kitsap 114, Klahowya 28

In the first swim meet of the fall season, NK sophomore Bethany Aban set school records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke, with times of 1 minute, 3.14 seconds and 1:11.51, respectively. Aban’s breaststroke time was also low enough to qualify her for the state tournament in the event.

Kingston 87, Klahowya 46

Kingston’s Kaylie Manix dropped 15 seconds from her 200-yard freestyle time to post a district-qualifying time.

Kingston 2, Steilacoom 2

The Buccaneers came back from a 5-1 loss at King’s on Tuesday by tying Steilacoom Thursday, 2-2.

“We feel good about coming back with a tie, but we know we should have won,” said Kingston Head Coach Craig Smith. “We’re still evolving offensively.”

Alexis Ekonomakis and Tory Gerkhen scored for the Bucs.

North Kitsap 4, Gig Harbor 4

The Vikings tied Gig Harbor in their home opener Thursday, 4-4.

“With every score by Gig Harbor, we just started playing harder, and it showed really great character and grit,” Viking Head Coach Dee Taylor said. “We did some things very well, but we need a lot of work.”

Kingston fell to Chimacum, 12-6.

North Kitsap was defeated, 35-19, by Bainbridge Island.

Kingston and North play tonight at 7 p.m. at the NK Stadium.
