Two people are dead following a head-on collision on Brownsville Highway Tuesday morning.

A 2002 silver Volvo car traveling northbound and a 1972 Chevy pickup truck traveling southbound collided in the 12300 block of Brownsville Highway in Central Kitsap around 9:30 a.m., according to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Wilson.

Silverdale resident Troy M. Thoman, 25, in the Volvo, and 47-year-old Charles S. Cockerham of Poulsbo, in the truck, both died at the scene of the crash. Thoman was not wearing a seat belt and there were no other occupants inside the vehicles.

“The force was such that both drivers were declared dead at the scene,” Wilson said.

Wilson said the collision occurred on a curve in the two-lane semi-rural road when the car crossed the center line into the oncoming lane of travel.

That portion of Brownsville Highway was temporarily closed while sheriff’s deputies investigated the collision. Factors including vehicle speeds, seat belt usage, truck cargo load shifting and road/weather conditions are being examined as part of the investigation. Wilson said it is unknown at this point if alcohol or narcotics were factors in the collision.

The Kitsap County Coroner will make a determination as to the cause and manner of death.

Anyone who may have information about the collision is asked to contact Deputy Dave Green, with the sheriff’s traffic unit, at (360) 337-4634.
