“So you think you know Beethoven?”
That’s the question the Bremerton Symphony is posing to music lovers and listeners of all ages. Of course, he’s one of the most famous composers of all time, piano virtuoso, “The Ninth Symphony,” Ludwig Van, and all that.
But think again, they say.
For instance, did you know that the Archduke Rudolph, crown prince of Austria, actually decreed that the rules of court etiquette did not apply to the composer?
Bremerton’s orchestra is planning to shine light on that side of the mercurial composer — the rebellious, troubled and tortured soul behind the beautiful music.
Actor Michael Robertson will play the part of a Ludwig Van, while the BSO will play excerpts from many of Beethoven’s symphonies.

A few weeks ago the show’s calendar on the local all-ages promoter Big Mouth Music’s Web page was blank. So I asked the man behind Big Mouth what the deal was and he replied, “No place to do shows.”
Community halls hadn’t been returning calls, but the Manette Saloon stepped into harbor the all-ages crowd.
The East Bremerton bar will be hosting two shows Saturday night, with the local crunchy, indie, garage-style band Alligators headlining both. The all-ages show, starts at 5 p.m. featuring Romona Come Closer and When We March, while the 21+ show starts at 9 p.m., showcasing Barcelona and Tofer Brown.
ISLAND SINGER/SONGWRITERS Mark Hoffman and Zach Anderson and Portland’s Adam Hill get their folk on at Pegasus Coffeehouse, 131 Parfitt Way on Bainbridge this weekend. All ages, by donation. www.pegasuscoffeehouse.com.
Portland’s Adam Hill is one of those cats heralding bluegrass and folk into the new century, holding to tradition while influenced by his generation. He’ll be performing at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at Pegasus, while the island folksters Zach Anderson and Mark Hoffman will play at the same time Feb. 1 and 2 respectively.
