BREMERTON — The USS Nimitz (CVN 68) will move to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton in 2015 for 16 months for a scheduled large-scale maintenance period.
Nimitz, currently homeported in Everett, was commissioned in 1975. It weighs 100,020 tons, is 1,092 feet long, and has a ship’s company of 3,200 Navy personnel and an air wing roster of 2,480.
In a press release from Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Public Affairs, the Navy said it is “working to ensure that the relocation of the aircraft carrier doesn’t interfere with the provision of positive, career-enhancing opportunities for the ship’s assigned sailors and their families …
“The Navy is making every effort to avoid unnecessary permanent change of station moves for sailors and their families due to the relocation of the aircraft carrier. The Navy’s goal is to minimize the impact the ship’s relocations will have on personnel.”
Navy Personnel Command will release guidance to the aircraft carrier that will specifically address how the transition will influence permanent change of station moves, housing allowances, detailing, exceptional family members, and other personnel-related concerns.
For those sailors who are married or claiming dependents, base allowance housing, or BAH, will change upon the effective date of the actual homeport change. Sailors with dependents not moving may request BAH for the dependent’s location. Sailors are being encouraged to see their departmental HPC coordinator.
For single sailors to keep their base allowance housing, those E5 and below must request to receive Bremerton BAH and provide a copy of their lease or mortgage. Single E6 and above will automatically receive the single BAH funds as long as they are not occupying government quarters. Single sailors will not be able to keep Everett BAH.
Nimitz, serving as the flagship for Carrier Strike Group 11, returned to Everett in December 2013 after completing a nine-month Western Pacific deployment to the U.S. 5th, 6th and 7th areas of responsibility.
