Excessive heat causes failure of concrete joints

An expansion joint between two slabs of concrete in front of the Comfort Inn on Kitsap Way failed Monday afternoon due to excessive heat, according to Colen Corey of the Bremerton Public Works Department.

Corey said this is not an uncommon occurrence and he has seen concrete lifted upwards of three feet in the past.

Crews removed the concrete slabs and temporarily fixed the road with asphalt, but this will likely not be the last time this service will be needed.

“I expect we’ll be doing this a few more times over the next few days with temperatures expected to be near 100 degrees,” Corey said.
