KINGSTON — Three Kingston High wrestlers will take their grappling skills to the Tacoma Dome this weekend at the 21st annual Washington State Mat Classic.
Juniors Alex Lambert and Travis Schriner will compete in the 119- and 189-pound divisions, respectively, while sophomore Kiana Witt will wrestle in the 112-pound weight class.
Witt placed first in her division at the girls regional tournament at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup last week, and has wrestled strong all season.
“I think she’s the best female wrestler in the state,” said KHS wrestling coach Bobby Reece. “She’s going to win state. I have no doubt. That’s how confident I am.”
Lambert is returning to the Mat Classic after a humbling experience at the 2008 tournament. As the No. 1 seed in his division last year, Lambert was quickly ousted in the first round. This season did not start off easily for the junior, but he has fought hard to make it back to the front of his class.
In earlier competition, Lambert lost two disappointing matches to Brandon Martin of Eatonville and Pedro Joaquin of North Mason. But at last week’s regionals, he defeated both wrestlers, including pulling off a spectacular comeback pin against Martin just five seconds before the final whistle.
Lambert finished first in the 119-pound division at the regional tournament, and appears to have a good chance at one of the top spots at state.
“I look for Alex to be standing on the podium at the end of this weekend,” said Reece.
Schriner started the 2008-09 season by flying under the radar, but has made vast improvements recently. He comes into the Mat Classic after a third-place finish at regionals.
“Travis has by far been our most improved wrestler over the past month,” said Reece.
Now, at the end of a grueling four-month season, the Buccaneers need to be prepared for the state tournament on all levels. Reece says he will focus on mental preparation leading up to the competition, and believes the trio of wrestlers will be ready.
“The hard work has been put in,” Reece said. “I feel good about how we’re wrapping things up this season.”
