Swimming: Olympic’s Wojtech splashes into record books

Olympic High School’s John Wojtech broke school records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke in the Trojans’ 100-65 win at home Tuesday over Bremerton High School.

“It was a really exciting meet for us,” Olympic swim coach Paul Henderson said. “Those records couldn’t have gone to a better guy.”

Wojtech has earned “ironman” status, meaning he has qualified for the 2010 state swim and dive championships in all eight individual events. He is the first Olympic athlete in school history to accomplish that feat.

Henderson said it’s unclear which events Wojtech will swim at state — swimmers are only allowed to compete in two individual events — but the decision will made soon.

The Olympic record in the 100 fly was set 27 years ago, and the 100 breast record was set by Adam Matthew, whose mother Patti attended Thursday’s meet.

“She was waiving and cheering and really happy for John,” Henderson said of Patti Matthew’s reaction.

Wojtech swam the 100 breast in 1 minute, 1.95 seconds and the 100 fly in 54:05. He also swam winning legs in the 200 medley relay as well as the 200 free relay.

Colton Kohnke won the 50 free in 24:27, Ethan Tracy took the 200 free with a time of 2:19.78, and Craig Boekenoogen secured victories in both the 100 free (59.23) and 100 backstroke (1:06.97) for Olympic.
