A man and woman are dead following what police are describing as a murder-suicide on Sunday in Navy Yard City.
A dog was also shot in the incident, but wasn’t killed.
The Kitsap County Coroner’s Office has determined that Jason Paul Allpress, 33, took his own life with a single gunshot wound to the head. Patti Ann McMullen, 43, also died from a single gunshot wound to the head that was the result of homicide, rather than suicide, according to the coroner’s office.
Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Wilson said that deputies responded to the 1600 block of Charleston Beach Road following multiple reports of gunfire.
“A lot of people were calling in because they were excited about this and it was truly horrific,” Wilson said.
Wilson said that one caller, in particular, who lives next door to the home where the shooting occurred, reported that he saw the injured dog, a large mastiff, and intended to tell Allpress that the animal was injured. Instead, though, the man discovered his Allpress’ body on his side porch.
Wilson said that Allpress was dead when police arrived and that a gun was recovered near his body. Upon entering the home, they discovered McMullen, also dead with a gunshot wound to the head.
“What we’re still not sure about is the relationship between the deceased man and the deceased woman,” Wilson said earlier this week before Allpress and McMullen were identified. “Everyone we’ve talked to doesn’t know who this woman is. She is unknown to neighbors and the man’s social group.”
Wilson said that Allpress’ former girlfriend, who was not at the scene at the time of the shooting, has been interviewed by detectives.
“Her relationship has been on-again, off-again, on-again and off-again,” Wilson said. “When this incident occurred, it was off-again.”
Wilson said that the injured dog was taken by Kitsap Animal Rescue to All Creatures Animal Hospital in Gorst.
“According to them, the dog had two gunshot injuries,” Wilson said. “One below the right eye that exited out behind the right ear and a second gunshot injury to right front leg just above paw which caused the leg to break in two places.”
