CKHS to host ROTC information event

Sophomores and juniors interested in attending one of the U.S. service academies or joining a college ROTC program are invited to attend.

Central Kitsap High School will host a military informational event on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. in its theater.

Sophomores and juniors interested in attending one of the U.S. service academies or joining a college ROTC program are invited to attend. Interested students don’t have to be from Central Kitsap High School — the event is for all residents of Kitsap County.

“It just happens to be hosted at Central Kitsap, but it’s for the whole region,” said David Beil, public relations coordinator for Central Kitsap School District.

A presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. outlining the qualification, nomination and appointment process for service in ROTC or at an academy. Representatives from ROTC, Academies and other aspects of the military will be present before and after the program to answer questions.

“There will be people there that can talk about options that (students) have as they go on to college,” Beil said.

There are multiple federal service academies, including the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Coast Guard Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy and the Air Force Academy.

Central Kitsap School District does not have JROTC programs at any of its high schools. South Kitsap and Bremerton High Schools both have Navy JROTC programs, however.
