The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and Bremerton Police Department along with the Bainbridge Island, Port Orchard and Poulsbo police departments and the Washington State Patrol will be initiating extra seat belt patrols from May 23 to June 5, according to a statement. Motorists can expect to see law enforcement patrolling city and county roads in search of unbuckled or improperly buckled drivers and passengers. The cost for the infraction is a $124 ticket.

Although deaths caused from traffic collisions have decreased 32 percent and serious injuries are down 27 percent in the state since 2002, between 2005 and 2009, 2,866 people have died in vehicle collisions and 13,749 were seriously injured.
