UPDATED: Sheriff’s office investigating two potential threats at Olympic High School

Kitsap County Sheriffs deputies are investigating two separate potential threats made against Olympic High School Dec. 17.

According to a voice message sent from school principal Rebecca Johnson, student and staff safety is the top priority at the school and so they called law enforcement in to investigate to be on the safe side.

David Beil with the Central Kitsap School District said the school was otherwise operating normally.

The message asked parents to encourage their children to tell them or staff members if anyone makes a threat against them, and also asked parents to talk with their children about the serious nature of making threats.

Deputy Scott Wilson with the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said rumors on social media that the two incidents were from one student were unfounded and unlikely.

“There are two incidents and they are not connected,” Wilson said.

The first incident was during a fifth-period math class. Someone left a note on one of the many school calculators that students share.

“It was a threat to harm. Nothing specific, just threats that there was going to be an incident,” Wilson said. The message was not directed against anyone in particular.

Wilson said they did not have any definitive suspects as the calculators were shared with so many students.

The second event was the same day during an emergency drill. Wilson said that during the drill a male student was overheard discussing with other students that the drill activities are probably what would happen during a real incident.

The boy did not make any threats. “Just verbalizing,” Wilson said. Words to the effect of, “‘Hey, if I were that guy …'”

“This was overhead … it raised a bit of an alarm,” Wilson said.

Later the same day, the same boy got into a fight with someone else and the school took disciplinary action.

“We’re there as a result of this implied threat,” Wilson said of the presence of uniformed officers at the school. They also were at the recent basketball game.

Wilson said the officers were there yesterday, last night, today and will also be there tomorrow.
