POULSBO — A baseball field that once made athletes cringe has seen a complete overhaul this fall.

Renovations to D Field at Snyder Park are nearing completion and are expected to be ready for opening day of Little League baseball on April 4.

“It’s usually the one to get the least attention,” said Mike Driscoll, president of North Kitsap Little League. “Now, people aren’t going to say ‘Oh no, I’ve got to play on D Field.'”

Work left to do includes building roofs on the dugouts and benches inside them, Driscoll said.

Other touch-ups include fixing any holes left in the field and leveling the infield, said Field and grounds manager Matt Murphy. With the majority of work completed he said he is waiting for a few dry days to put the final work into the field.

“There’s always something to do,” he said of the work on the fields.

The renovations began after Farmer’s Insurance donated $10,000 to the park in August. Though the money did not cover everything, volunteer work helped make it possible, which included a work party on Sunday. Murphy said about 100 people have volunteered their time to the renovations.

Viking Fence also donated time to placing the fence around the perimeter of the field, which was completed on Monday.

D Field is used by the minor divisions of the North Kitsap Little League. Because the season has not started, there are very few Little League players who know of the renovations, Driscoll said. However, he knows they will not be disappointed.

“Once those games get going, I know the kids will be excited,” he said.
