POULSBO — The North Kitsap School Board is one member short after Kathleen Dassel resigned as District 3 director and board president Aug. 23.
In a letter addressed to the board and superintendent Patty Page, Dassel stated she is resigning due to “constraints of family matters.”
“I am regretfully tendering my resignation as a Director of the Board,” Dassel wrote. “It has been an honor and a privilege to work with you and the wonderful, talented, and self-sacrificing staff, volunteers, parents and students in our District. Thank you for this opportunity. God bless you all.”
Dan Weedin, director of District 2 and formerly the vice president of the board, is now president.
Scott Henden is now vice president.
Weedin did not have any further details about Dassel’s decision to resign. Returning from a business trip in Portland Thursday, Weedin said he spoke with Dassel for about five minutes over the phone in a parking lot in Battle Ground, where she gave him a “quick rundown.”
Weedin did say it sounded like the decision to resign was difficult for Dassel.
“I’m going to miss her,” he said.
The board now has 90 days to fill the position. The board will officially post the position early next week. Anyone living within District 3 can apply. District 3 includes Indianola, a portion of Poulsbo and Suquamish.
Dassel’s term expires December 2013. The person to fill the position will be required to run for election if he or she wishes to continue serving. Because the 2012-13 budget is already adopted and the first day of school isn’t far off (Sept. 5), Weedin said the resignation won’t hinder the board too much. If Dassel resigned a month ago, it would have been a different story, he said.
