POULSBO — The Poulsbo Sons of Norway welcomed its 2014 royalty this week, while at the same time witnessing the continuation of one family’s  tradition of service to the lodge.

The ceremony was Tuesday evening at the Sons of Norway lodge. Breanna Bolliger, a 16-year-old Running Start student at Olympic College, was chosen to succeed Kari Slotten as lodge queen.

Rachel Doornink presented her princess sash to her successor, Elinor Krafsky. Carly Tizzano will continue as a princess in the court.

Selection of lodge royalty is based on the applicant’s service to the lodge. The queen represents the lodge at lodge functions and at Viking Fest, and serves as the Lucia Bride at Julefest.

Breanna’s selection as queen was of particular significance, as she is a third-generation member of the Sons of Norway. Her great-grandmother, Irma Tweiten, was present to observe the event.

Breanna’s family has a long history with the Poulsbo lodge. Great-grandmother Tweiten was a founding teacher of the Poulsbo Leikarringen youth dancers. And Breanna’s late grandfather was a Sons of Norway lodge president and a director of the International Sons of Norway.

“It’s definitely very familiar,” Breanna said, noting she grew up in the lodge. “It’s a big honor in my house. It feels good to have the title.”

Also recognized at the meeting were lodge members Tommy Thompson, Grace Overby and David Shields, who have achieved gold member status after 35 years participating in the Sons of Norway.
