PORT ORCHARD — Election Day is nearly upon us and, thankfully for most, we’ll see its tumultuous conclusion after ballots are counted beginning Nov. 8.
But despite the contentiousness of the political campaign this year, the Kitsap County Auditor Elections Division estimates voter ballot returns to stay in line with recent presidential election years.
As of Nov. 4, a total of 74,166 ballots – 44.51 percent of the 166,115 ballots mailed out — have been received by county elections officials. When all ballots are counted, the final voter turnout is widely expected to top 80 percent. But how much depends on whether an “enthusiasm gap” exists this year.
In the 2012 presidential election, the voter turnout in Kitsap County was 82.10 percent; in 2008, 87 percent; in 2004, 85.97 percent. The voter turnout in Kitsap in 2000 was 79 percent.
