KINGSTON — It’s about a 50-50 chance the Kingston Food Bank will continue operating after mid-November.

As of late June, food bank director Barb Fulton was skeptical enough money would be raised to pay for another year of rent.

“In the middle of November, [the lease] is up,” Fulton said. “If we don’t have the funds, I’m probably going to close. I can’t go back into the motor home … I wouldn’t know what else to do.

Fulton said of the food bank’s survival: “It’s about a 50-50 [chance].”

In an effort to raise money to pay rent, the food bank hosts a rummage sale over the last weekend of every month, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The food bank is located at 26102 Illinois Ave. It is a two-story house next to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department unstaffed Kingston office.

The food bank pays $16,000 a year for rent and utilities, Fulton said. The last fundraiser the food bank held netted about $350.

Prior to moving into the house on Illinois Avenue, the food bank was operating out of a 22-foot motor home. The food bank was able to afford rent for the house by a grant from the Pam Foster and Liz Austin Fund.

Fulton said if she can’t make rent, moving the food bank back into the motor home is not an option. Fulton, her husband, and volunteers were able to make it work once, but she doesn’t see it happening again.

“That’s kinda it,” Fulton said of her dwindling options.

As the food bank attempts to raise money for rent, it is preparing for the Wolfle Elementary School summer lunch program. The program runs July 16 through Sept. 3, and provides enough food for students during summer break for three to four meals each week. The program is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

The food bank is accepting donations.

The food bank, founded by Fulton’s parents in 1952, meets the needs of approximately 50 families a week. The food bank also provides school supplies to local students in September, and has clothing for people in need.
