POULSBO — “Nunsensations: The Nunsense Vegas Revue” opened May 18 and continues through June 17 at the Jewel Box Theatre (www.jewelboxpoulsbo.org).

The play, as described on the “Nunsense” website: “ ‘The Nunsense Vegas Revue’ takes the sisters on a brand new adventure. When a parishioner volunteers to donate $10,000 to the sisters’ school if they will perform in a club in Las Vegas, Mother Superior is hesitant to accept. However, after being convinced by the other sisters that ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,’ Reverend Mother agrees. What follows is the most feather-filled, sequin-studded, fan-dancing ‘Nunsense’ show ever!”

The comedy features Jacquie Svidran, a living legend of the local stage. Svidran, 85, has been acting since she was 6, when she won the lead in a school production of “Little Red Riding Hood.” That was 1933. In Hollywood, Charles Laughton was starring in “The Private Life of Henry VIII,” Katherine Hepburn was starring in “Morning Glory,” for which they would win Oscars.

Svidran acted with the Poulsbo Players beginning in the 1960s, performing with the Players in their various venues — North Kitsap High School Auditorium, Kiana Lodge, Poulsbo Armory, Judith’s Tearoom (now MorMor’s), the Liberty Shores rehab room, and finally the Jewel Box Theatre. Local theatergoers remember her one-woman show that raised more than $20,000 for the theater. The theater’s green room is named in her honor.

“It’s a Catholic show and the Lutheran Church has bought out a show,” Svidran said of “Nunsensations.” “It was a very nice compliment. Now if we can get the Presbyterians there,” she quipped.
