What’s Up Weekend Rock

Local funk rock reggae CD release in Port Orchard, a potent blend of punk in East Bremerton and metal in West Bremerton.

FRIDAY

NEUTRALBOY w/ Forth Yeer Freshman and The Altarboys at 9:30 p.m. April 11 at Winterland, 1220 Sylvan Way, Bremerton. 21+, $5 cover.

Forth Yeer Freshman, punk rock juggernauts from Denver, they say.

A decade-old band packing G-style bandanas and more old school nostalgia like things from Sir-Mix-A-Lot and the movie “Friday,” into a slightly subdued, heavily Motorhead-influenced, beer flavored Zeke rock. They’re also packing quite a few songs about things like racist dogs and a lot of other twisted humor with names we can’t print in the family news pages.

This weekend, they’re coming straight from Colorado to Bremerton (with three shows along the way) for a show at Winterland April 12. It’s the first of three shows in the Seattle area, starting a three-month a tour for the scholars — which means they’ll probably have a whole lot of crazy in them. Honestly, this entire show will probably contain copious amounts of craziness. Five bucks to get in the door at Winterland.

Neutralboy, Bremerton’s rasped-rapture, is throwing down for one of it’s last shows in town until August. Also Portland punks The Altarboys return.

SATURDAY

COMMON ANCESTOR CD RELEASE w/ comedian Cliff Barnes and a mandatory prime rib dinner starting at 6 p.m. at the Beachside Grill and Bar, 1604 Bay

St. Port Orchard. Tickets are limited; $20 single, $35 per couple, 21+.

At first glance, the door charge for Common Ancestor’s CD release this weekend seems ridiculous — $20 per person for a local duo.

But the concert comes with a massive prime rib dinner prepared by the Beachside Grill and Bar in Port Orchard. The dinner will be from 6-8 p.m., followed by the reggae funk soul stylings of Common Ancestor. But you must buy tickets for the dinner to get into the show.

At the show, Common Ancestor will be formally releasing its first CD “Pivotal,” which is also available online at www.myspace.com/commonancestor.

Info: Call the Beachside at (360) 874-2221.

VS. THE WORLD w/ Carriers, Stabbed in the Face and A Good Artist at 7 p.m., April 12 at Jackson Hall, 9161 Washington Ave. in Silverdale. Presented by Big Mouth Music, $7.

Vs. the World, a band of Bremerton hardcore, is quite possibly one of the darkest bands in the county. Most of that stems from the evil-sounding wailings of lead singer Gabe Sink.

Backed by a wall of heavy metal guitar, on-point bass and varied but always driving drums, Sink’s vox summon death metal heads with screams into the night about “The Darkness Within.”

They’ll share the Darkness and the Big Mouth Music all ages stage with even more Bremerton hardcore from the bands Carriers, Stabbed in the Face and A Good Artist.

CASTDOWN w/ Stonecreep and In Memorium at 9:30 p.m. April 12 at the Ironhead Saloon, 2711 Sixth St., Bremerton. 21+, $5 cover.

Keeping the metal flowing, the Ironhead Saloon will be providing a few out-of-towners.

Castdown, an instrumental-heavy doomcore band from Seattle will join a more melodic hardcore band from Portland called Stonecreep and black thrash metal special guests In Memorium.

Be ready for graveyard-sounding reverb and vocals that sound the way Nosferatu looks.
