OLYMPIA —  Governor Jay Inslee endorsed two measures that Sen. Jan Angel worked on during this year’s legislative session.

The first bill to receive the governor’s ceremonial signature April 2 extends funding for homeless-housing assistance, and requires a neutral third-party audit and a task force – two things that Angel said were mandatory for transparency, oversight and accountability of the $40 document tax, which is managed by the state Department of Commerce.

“I’m proud that the bill that was signed into law is actually a stronger bill than the original version,” said Angel (R-Port Orchard). “The new bill was not dependent upon an approved budget – it is actually the product of a bipartisan team effort and it puts the proper systems in place so that we are held accountable for how taxpayers’ dollars are being spent.”

The second measure addresses a fairness issue, according to Angel, and protects nonprofit transportation brokers from unpaid premium fraud by subcontractors.

Angel said a 26th Legislative District transportation broker, Paratransit Services in Bremerton, alerted her about the issue, which prompted her to introduce a measure last year while she was still serving in the state House of Representatives.

“My measure last year never even made it out of committee,” said Angel. “I’m very happy to see my House companion bill become law this year so that transportation brokers are not saddled with the burden of subcontractors’ unpaid claims and premiums.”
