A 67-year-old South Kitsap woman called police after finding a “high” young woman in her husband’s pick-up truck Tuesday afternoon, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the incident report, the woman said she and her husband came home to the 900 block of Nebraska Street around 4:30 p.m. to find the 22-year-old suspect, whom she believed to be under the influence of narcotics, in the front seat of her husband’s pick-up truck.
When she told the suspect she was calling 911, the woman replied, “Go ahead — I just got out of jail and I need a place to stay.”
When deputies arrived, they placed the suspect in handcuffs. They found a black suitcase that the homeowner said belonged to her and was full of items from her garage. They noted that the truck’s steering column was damaged and it appeared the suspect tried to jump start the vehicle.
After talking to the suspect and her sister, deputies learned she had been released from jail about three days prior. The suspect said earlier that day she had gotten a ride “from two tweekers” to Port Orchard and was left on the side of the road.
She told deputies she was homeless and trying to get out of the rain. She admitted to taking items from the garage, but said she was not trying to steal the truck.
The homeowner said the truck is never locked.
The suspect was then arrested for one count each of second-degree burglary and attempted motor vehicle theft. She was booked into Kitsap County Jail under $20,000 bail.
