Vikings are in ‘good shape’ | Spring Preview

POULSBO — The North Kitsap varsity soccer team has at least two players for each position, according to Coach Chris May. And that’s a good sign.

So far, the team has a 1-0-1 record after playing Central Kitsap March 10 and White River March 13. Those first two games were a good showing by the Vikings.

“This early in the year, we’re keeping the ball really well,” May said.

The Vikings were scheduled to play North Mason Thursday; results were unavailable at press time. May tried for a more challenging non-league schedule. Along with Central Kitsap and White River, the Vikings will play Bainbridge Island and Bonney Lake later in the season. He did this to help prepare the team for playoffs and, he hopes, State.

“Tried to beef up the non-league schedule to get variety and bigger opponents to see if that would help,” May said.

The 2011-12 team has balanced play. May would not describe the team as strictly defensive or offensive. The team, he said, just wants to play good soccer, with lots of short passing and working the ball around the field. However, the Vikings are not opposed to attacking or going on the break. It really depends on their opponent, May said. Overall, the team likes to control the ball and create scoring chances.

The team tied Central Kitsap 2-2. Although May felt like they could have won, it was a good first game, he said. Viking goals included a shot from Ismeal DeLuna (Fischer Young assist) in the 15th minute and a goal by Nick Tedford (DeLuna assist) in the 47th minute. Against White River March 13, the Vikings won 2-1 with a goal by Tedford (Garrett Wilder assist) and the winning goal by Raul DeLuna (Ismeal DeLuna assist).
