BREMERTON — The primary suspect in a gun store burglary was arrested after a confrontation with U.S. marshals April 28.

Patrick W. Nelson was arrested at about 5 p.m. in Forest Ridge Park after the SUV he was in rammed a U.S. Marshals vehicle, the Bremerton Patriot reported. Shots were fired at the vehicle Nelson and a woman were in, in retaliation to being rammed.

Nelson and the woman were arrested. They sustained injuries related to the crash, but early reports don’t indicate they were injured by gun fire.

One U.S. marshal was taken to the hospital for injuries related to the crash.

Nelson was seated in the passenger seat of the SUV, according to information from the Patriot. When marshals attempted to arrest Nelson, the woman drove the SUV into the marshals’ vehicle.

Bremerton police officers, Bremerton firefighters, and Kitsap County Sheriff’s officers responded to the scene.

Detectives from the Bremerton Police Department, Washington State Patrol, and the Kitsap Critical Incident Response Team will conduct an investigation, which is standard procedure for these types of incidents.

“Nelson has been a priority target of the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, and I thank the U.S. Marshals for their diligence and excellent work getting him into custody,” Bremerton Police Chief Steve Strachan said.

“Today’s incident shows how desperate and dangerous this man and his female partner were, and I am very gratified that no law enforcement officers or residents were hurt,” Strachan added.

Nelson, 40, had a nationwide warrant for his arrest for his alleged involvement in the burglary of Boerner Firearms in Gorst on April 9. Fourteen handguns were stolen from the store.

Nelson is a convicted felon under supervision by the state Department of Corrections. He was last released from incarceration on Feb. 28; he had been doing time for violating probation. His record includes narcotics, eluding a police vehicle, third-degree assault, auto theft, escape, and dangerous weapons violations.
