POULSBO — ADM Architecture owner Aaron D. Murphy started an outreach, Empowering  The Mature Mind, to advise Baby Boomers and their families regarding changes that can be made in the home to enable people to stay there as they get older.

The concept is called Aging In Place — the idea that people can and should be able to stay in their own homes, regardless of changes that may occur in mental or physical abilities as they age.

Murphy is a certified Aging-in-Place specialist, trained in Aging-in-Place home modifications, remodeling projects and other solutions that meet the at-home needs of older adults.

“Eighty-nine percent of those polled by the AARP state that they would like to stay in their own homes for the remainder of their lives,” Murphy said. “But almost all of our houses are broken as it relates to this concept. Our homes are not designed correctly for our changing needs.”

Murphy was trained in the National Association of Home Builders  program in 2009 to be a certified Aging In Place specialist, and has spoken on “The Aging In Place Phenomenon” over the last two years.
