Kitsap County residents are invited to one of two free workshops to learn how to keep their septic systems working well and lasting longer.

The workshops are Oct. 14, at the Long Lake Bob Oke Community Room, 5100 Long Lake Rd. SE, Port Orchard and Oct. 22, at the Greater Hansville Community Center, 6778 NE Buck Lake Rd., Hansville This free event runs from 6-8 p.m. at both locations.

The workshops include information about:

• How septic systems work

• Best ways to care for them

• How to detect if a system is failing and what to do next

• Low-interest loan programs for septic repairs

• Attendees will also receive a free “green” cleaning kit

• Refreshments provided

Well-maintained septic systems save homeowners money and keep bacteria and nutrients out of local creeks, lakes and Puget Sound.

“Just as you would maintain your car so it runs well and lasts longer, you need to maintain your septic system,” said Kerrie Crawford, Kitsap Public Health District (KPHD). “A failing septic system can cost thousands of dollars to repair and can be a serious health risk to your family and the environment.”

Registration is required and space is limited. Register today at septicsenseworkshop.brownpapertickets.com or call Kitsap1 at 360-337-5777. Workshops are sponsored by Clean Water Kitsap, a multi-agency partnership working to reduce flooding, prevent pollution, and restore fish habitat.
