KINGSTON — A teenager who attempted to make a getaway with a shopping cart filled with $300 worth of groceries by pushing it down the highway got away, but ditched the groceries.
Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Albertson’s grocery store at 8196 NE State Highway 104 Aug. 22 after an employee reported chasing the suspect, who was pushing the cart of groceries, east on the highway.
Deputies did not locate the teen, but did interview a woman who was seen loading the shopping cart with the youth, reports said.
The woman, 23, of Suquamish, told deputies she picked up the teen hitchhiking on Hansville Road NE and went into the store with him, but didn’t know he was planning to steal groceries.
Witnesses said, however, when the teen left the store pushing the cart, the woman was sitting in her car in the parking lot with the door open. With an employee chasing him, the teen ran past the car and onto the highway, eventually running into a yard and disappearing.
No arrests were made.
