BREMERTON — Last weekend, more than 120 people walked all night in Relay For Life in Poulsbo to raise money for cancer research.
On July 28 and Aug. 7, advocates for cancer education and treatment will take another swing at cancer — with golf clubs.
The Peninsula Prostate Institute’s Boxers and Birdies Charity Golf Classic is July 28, noon check-in, at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton. The Seattle Seahawks, the Sounders, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and Best Northwest Chef Tom Douglas have signed decorated boxer shorts that will be on display and auctioned at the event. Pat Cashman, of Almost Live fame, will serve as the master of ceremonies.
The event is being held to spread awareness and raise funds for local prostate cancer research and education. The entry fee is $125 individual, $500 foursome. The fee includes 18 holes of golf, prizes and dinner. Dinner only is $25.
Peninsula Prostate Institute, in partnership with Harrison Health Partners Oncology, is among the first sites in the nation to treat advanced prostate cancer patients with PROVENGE, the first in a new therapeutic class known as autologous cellular immunotherapies.
PROVENGE was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of men with advanced prostate cancer and is made by Dendreon Corporation. PROVENGE is designed to stimulate a patient’s immune system to identify and target prostate cancer cells. Each dose is manufactured specifically for each patient using his immune cells.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the United States and the third most common cancer worldwide. More than two million men in the United States have prostate cancer.
Kitsap Cancer Services presents its eighth annual Golf Challenge fundraiser Aug. 7 at Gold Mountain.
Kitsap Cancer Services is a local non-profit that provides support services for people and families living in our community who are affected by cancer.
The title sponsors for this year’s event are Harrison Medical Center, Tim Ryan Construction and Advanced Medical Imaging.
