Jack A. Schenck died Feb. 19, 2008. He was 80.
He was born on Oct. 5, 1927 in Bellingham. After serving in the Navy, he spent most of his working years in Kitsap County, except a short time working with his grandfather for the railroad in Bellingham. He is believed to be the first to open a sporting goods store in downtown Poulsbo with his brother-in-law Al Byrd. He also worked for Fred Hill Materials and North Kitsap Sand & Gravel before moving on to the Kitsap County Road Department. He spent 25 years working for the county, spending his last years as the superintendent of Kitsap County Roads.
Mr. Schenck was involved with North Kitsap Little League and North Kitsap Babe Ruth in their beginnings. His true love was fishing at Neah Bay and Sekiu with his wife Ruth (Susie) and his friends of many years Jack and Marlene McKimson. He loved fishing with family and friends and especially when the grandkids started fishing. He was able to celebrate his 80th birthday this past year at a gathering with friends and all his family members. He was so pleased to be able to hold his two newest great-granddaughters together, Emery and Erin. Mr. Schenck touched many lives and will truly be missed.
He was preceded in death by two older sisters Maxine and Geraldine; and his beloved wife of 48 years, Ruth Alice (Susie).
Survivors include son Steve (Raye) Schenck; daughter Faye (Ron) Webber of Auburn; brother Joe Schenck; niece Linda (Charlie) Riddle; grandchildren Donald, Shelley, Mike and Jackie; great-grandchildren Macey, Joey, Ashley, Aubrey, Emery and Erin; his good friend Katherine Conley; and his family of friends on C-dock at the Port of Poulsbo.
A celebration of life will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m. today, Feb. 23, at his home at 18420 10th Ave NE, Poulsbo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Port of Poulsbo, P.O. Box 732, Poulsbo, WA 98370 or your favorite charity.
