Mildred J. Byczkowski, who helped many military members in times of crisis as the Red Cross coordinator at Naval Hospital Bremerton, died Jan. 1, 2007, in Bremerton at the age of 84.
For her efforts with the Red Cross Mrs. Byczkowski was given the Clara Barton Award, the highest honor the organization bestows on its volunteers. The Bremerton resident also worked as a medical clerk at the Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor medical clinic where she enjoyed greeting patients to ensure their visit was pleasant.
Mrs. Byczkowski was born Dec. 9, 1922, in Cicero, Ill. to Mary (Volenec) and John Balik. She later married Apolinary “Paul” Byczkowski who preceded her in death.
Viewings are scheduled for today, Jan. 6, from 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., followed by viewings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton. A funeral service is at 2 p.m. Tuesday followed by burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Byczkowski is survived by a niece, several cousins and a host of friends whom she loved and will miss her.
