Martin James Charles

Martin James Charles, the oldest member of the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe, died Nov. 25, 2007 on Bainbridge Island. He was 93.

Charles was born to Thomas and Suzanne Charles in Washington Harbor on March 30, 1914.

He married Angelina Fulton on Oct. 31, 1935 in Suquamish.

Charles worked as a logger, longshoreman, fisherman, clam digger and rigger at Bangor, loading ammunition on ships. He volunteered as a carpenter for various churches.

He enjoyed powwows and visiting different casinos.

Charles is survived by his son Ron (Sharon) Charles of Little Boston; grandchildren Michelle (Mike) Jones of Little Boston, Marlo Charles of Little Boston, Angela (Brad) Charles of Little Boston and Christina (Justin) Moff of Little Boston; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Angelina, son Martin Junior, and siblings Nettie, Rubie, Katherine, Tillie, George, Louie and Earl.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 29 at Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Center in Little Boston, and burial will be at the Little Boston Cemetery.
