Lester Albin Backlund, Poulsbo, died April 2 at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Bremerton. He was 76 years old.
He was born April 27, 1925 in Hyas, Saskatchewan, Canada to Gust Albin and Eleanor (Sewell) Backlund.
He attended schools in Port Ludlow and Chimicum and graduated from Chimicum High School in 1943. He later graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and also in the Korean conflict.
He married Muriel Backlund in Poulsbo in 1960. She preceded him in death on March 5, 1998.
Until his retirement in 1980, he taught math at North Kitsap High School. Following his retirement as a teacher, he owned and operated a sawmill and did custom cut logs.
He was a member of the clock collectors guild and helped to build the original Poulsbo Yacht Club where he was a member and sailed his boat the “Lune” from Poulsbo to Alaska.
Surviving him are his daughters Carolyn Mikkelborg of Poulsbo and Pat Dinger of Republic; a cousin, Myrna Cooper, Van, Canada; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. today, April 6 at Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove. Cremation is at Cherry Grove with inurnment at Vinland Lutheran Church Cemetery.
