Winfield S. Fountain, 89

Winfield S. Fountain of Hood Canal died Dec. 21, 2007. He was 89.

Fountain was born to Viola U. and William W. Fountain on March 2, 1918.

He married Louise Zwicker Fountain in December 1939 in St. Maries, Idaho.

Fountain graduated from North Idaho College of Education with a bachelor’s degree, Gonzaga University with a master’s degree and the University of Washington with a doctorate degree.

He worked as a teacher of all grades for 40 years, filling the positions of coach, counselor, high school principal, college professor and dean of the School of Education at Seattle University. He also worked in three northern Idaho school districts; the Raymond, Richland and Moses Lake districts in Washington; and as a visiting professor at the University of Rhode Island. He served as the vice president and president of the Washington Education Assocation.

Fountain served as an infantry enlisted man and officer during World War II, and later was a Chemical Corps and Civil Affairs officer in the U.S. Army Reserves. He retired as a lieutenant colonel.

He was a member of the St. Olafs Catholic Church and a member of the Moses Lake and Seattle Broadway Kiwanis Club.

Fountain is survived by Louise Fountain; sons Timothy Win Fountain of Poulsbo and Barry Brett (Lynn) Fountain of Renton; daughters Molly Michelle (Bill) Dey of Holly, Constance Kevin (Bart) Rogers of Martinsburg, W. Va. and Heather Anne Grotenhuis of San Jose, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 6 p.m. Dec. 27 and 10 a.m. Dec. 28 at St. Olafs Catholic Church in Poulsbo.
