Robert “Bob” Hogan
September 3, 1949 – December 27, 2015
Robert Thomas “Bob” Hogan, 66, of Poulsbo, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Dec. 27 at Franciscan-St. Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor.
Bob was born Sept. 3, 1949 in Bremerton, and grew up in Sandy Hook and on Hood Canal. He graduated in 1967 from North Kitsap, where he played saxophone in the band. Music was a huge part of Bob’s life and he loved playing his guitar, attending concerts and singing at his favorite karaoke spots around the state.
In his youth, Bob was a member of Cub Scout Pack 571 and Boy Scout Troop 571. In his adult years, he maintained his involvement and served as Cubmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster for those same groups.
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Okinawa, Japan during the Vietnam War, being honorably discharged in 1969.
Prior to and upon returning from military service, Bob was in the apprentice program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and began his career there in the shipfitter shop (Shop 11). At the time of his death, he was a nuclear zone manager in his 48th year at the shipyard.
Bob and his wife, Kathleen Downey, were married on Nov. 18, 1972 and had just celebrated their 43rd anniversary. They lived their whole marriage in the Poulsbo area, where they raised their three children. They spent vacations traveling around the small towns of Washington and never missed Oktoberfest in Leavenworth.
He was a member of the North Kitsap Eagles Aerie 3586 (where for many years he and Kathleen decorated the hall for holidays and special events), Poulsbo Historical Society, Federal Managers Association, and served as vice president of the original Lemolo Citizens Club. He was also the Port Gamble Country Christmas “Santa” for the first eight years of that community celebration.
Bob is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter Courtney (Troy) Turnley, Gig Harbor; sons Kyle (Trudy) Foreman, Ephrata, and Kelly Hogan, Poulsbo; granddaughter Laura Turnley, Tacoma; grandsons Alex Turnley, Gig Harbor, and Adam (Jason) Van Hee, Seattle; sister Catherine (Dan) Breedon, Moorehead, Minnesota; and uncle Loren (JoEllen) Hansen, Kirkland.
Bob’s memorial service took place on Jan. 2 at the North Kitsap Eagles. Memorials may be made to the Poulsbo Historical Society, P.O. Box 844, Poulsbo 98370.
