James (Jim) Fleming, 47

James (Jim) Grant of Albuquerque, N.M. died Feb. 13, 2007 in Albuquerque, N.M. He was 47.

Fleming was born to John and Nancy Fleming in Wailuku, Hawaii on Nov. 28, 1959.

He was married Cearlwyn Fleming.

Fleming received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1982 and his masters and doctorate degrees from Stanford University in material science and engineering in 1984 and 1987.

Fleming worked as a researcher at Sandia National Laboratories beginning in 1988, where he was the author or co-author of dozens of publications and held more than 20 patents. In 1998, he was identified as one of the 50 Research and Development stars to watch by Industry Week magazine. He was promoted to Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in recognition of his many contributions at Sandia and was the recipient of two R&D 100 awards and a Lockheed Martin Nova award.

Fleming enjoyed playing soccer and coaching youth soccer teams, hiking, cycling, woodworking and gardening.

Fleming is survived by his wife Cearlwyn Fleming of Albuquerque, N.M.; son Jesse Fleming of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters Keila Fleming and Brighid Fleming of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister Ann Fleming McMahon; and his parents John and Nancy Fleming of Poulsbo.
