Marie J. Burke, 82

Former Poulsbo resident Marie Jeannette Burke died Dec. 28, 2003 in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. She was 82.

She was born to Ingvald and Ragna Haugen of Eagledale on Bainbridge Island in Seattle in 1921.

Burke married George Burke in 1948 at the original Bethany Lutheran Church on the Islands West Blakely.

Burke attended McDonald Grade School in Eagledale and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1939.

She worked in revenue accounting at Pacific NW Bell in Seattle for many years. She also worked on Bainbridge Island at the Winslow Marine Shipyard, Lynwood Sanitarium and Winslow Beauty Salon.

Burke lived on Bainbridge Island for 68 years prior to retiring to Poulsbo. She and her husband moved Arizona in 1999, where they lived on an island in the Colorado River, namely Lake Havasu.

Burke was active in the Bainbridge Island Democratic Club and the Kitsap County Democratic Party for 31 years. She was also active in the Bethany Lutheran Church, having served three terms on the church council and served on many church committees.

Burke also worked with the Seattle Children’s Orthopedic Hospital through the Bainbridge Amelia Hungerford Guild.

She loved the Hawaiian Islands and made 22 extended vacations with her husband George to Kauai, Maui, Oahu and Molakai. Her favorite place was Poipu Beach on Kauai.

Burke is survived by her husband George Burke of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; son Patrick (Janice) Burke of Olympia; one grandson, two great grandchildren, three nephews and two nieces.

Burke was preceded in death by her sisters Ruth Mosher and Gladys Ruthrauff.

There will be a family service at Port Blakely Cemetery on Bainbridge Island at a later date. Lake Havasu Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
